Yellowstone Cyanobacteria
Yellowstone National Park is home to scalding hot, richly colored thermal pools. Much of the color in these pools comes from algal mats made up of microorganisms such as the cyanobacterium, Synechococcus. The genetic diversity of these organisms brings into question the notion of what constitutes a species in the world of bacteria. A new grant from the National Science Foundation  (Award No. EF-0328698) will help decipher who's related to whom and how in this complex environment.
