Ho-kwang (Dave) Mao of the Carnegie Institution’s Geophysical Laboratory and Director of the High Pressure Collaborative Access Team (HPCAT) has been awarded the 2005 Roebling Medal of the Mineralogical Society of America, the society’s highest honor. The medal is awarded “for scientific eminence as represented primarily by scientific publication of outstanding original research in mineralogy.”* Dr. Mao represents the third year in a row that a member of the Geophysical Laboratory has won the prize, with Joseph Boyd in 2004 and Charles Prewitt in 2003. Other recipients are the Geophysical Laboratory’s Hatten Yoder in 1992 and Nobel laureate Linus Pauling in 1967. Dr. Mao, who will be made a Life Fellow of the society, will receive the 2-inch diameter14-carat engraved gold medal, along with an identical bronze medal, at an awards lunch in Salt Lake City next fall. |
